Day Twenty-Seven - Quilt Pieces

Today my sister, mom and I went to my aunt's house where she taught us how to do a quilt pattern called "scrappy nine".

This is how far I got today.

Each block is a foot square, so 3'x3' in total right now.  You start with one square of 9 different fabrics and end up with 9 completely different squares. They look pretty random, but everything is actually very organized and calculated. I have more fabric and more colors that I plan to incorporate. I want to make a whole huge quilt eventually.

After finishing our blocks, my aunt took us to Quilter's Heaven. It was an Ahhhmazing quilt shop with more beautiful fabrics. It was so hard to resist going crazy and buying a little bit of everything. I will definitely be back.

Fabric Flower

Tried making flowers from Suffolk puffs (yo-yo's), quite pleased with the results, another textile flower to file away for future reference.

tad 2010-26 OX

I had a craft party just before moving to SF and my friend, Ferrie, brought 3 boxes of fabric of all types and sizes. I couldn't figure out what to do with the small pieces and just didn't want to throw them away...I've just recently realized that they are perfect for making stuffed toys like this one. It's an OX!

I actually didn't have enough of one color to make this, but I really dig how the combination of the 3 colors came together (parts from the same scraps: head and belly/bottom; horns and tail; body). Unlike the elephant and mouse I did a few weeks ago I decided to skip the pattern and free hand the shapes on this one and sew it by hand (I don't know why; I just felt like it). I also used the shreds of scrap fabric from the cut outs as part of the stuffing. Finally, I crocheted the nosering, left a long tail at the end and used the tail to sew it into its nose. (I say it because I assume the recipient will name it; are there girl oxen?) I used the same yellow yarn to "brand" it with my initials on the bottom.

tad 2010-24 Double Sided

I think these are double-sided fabric yoyo pendants (I haven't added any attachments like pins or hooks, so what they will eventually be is TBD). one picture is the opposite side of the other)

A thought: last year I didn't know TAD was only one month long and was sorely disappointed when it ended. This year, I've been a little more prepared, but somehow it doesn't seem any less sad. If anything, I think I am just sadder a little sooner. Anyone else getting the blues about it?

(On the bright side, since I'd like to try ending on a positive note, i dished out a bit of that kimchi I made yesterday to my neighbors today and just got a thank-you-it-was-good-with-my-dinner-tonight email, so it must have been good!)

Flowers made from Suffolk Puffs (yo-yo's)

After making a brooch with a nautical flavour yesterday, today I thought I would play around with Suffolk puffs (yo-yo's) again. This time they look more like flowers, and the gold one compliment the bib necklace, I made before Christmas.

Thing Twenty-two: Fat Quarter Apron (with Spoonflower fabric)

Not only did I make this apron today, it's from fabric that I designed myself using Spoonflower!

AND I made a tutorial for it so you can make one too! It's my first tutorial, so I'd love to get feedback on it. Check it out: http://wendymoondesigns.blogspot.com/2010/02/tutorial-fat-quarter-reversible-apron.html

Thing a day, day eighteen

The eighteenth day of TAD was a really quick project (aside from the pre-washing of the fabrics.)

I used my pinking sheers to cut out some cupcake fabric to sew onto a plain light brown dishtowel. I thought it came out pretty cute although I'm pretty sure I cut enough width of the fabric to cover the dishtowel but somehow it shifted so the sides get short changed a bit. I didn't want to obsess over it because I thought it came out cute anyway.

thing-a-day #16: mouse pad refresh & small quilted piece

On staycation this week, so had a little extra time to spend making things.  Old mousepad + fusible web + fabric = fresh mousepad & coaster.  The quilted piece is based on yesterday's lobster & blueberries color scheme and will be finished tomorrow when I am not so tired.  Feels really good to be sewing again...

Passport Cover

I made a passport cover today. I chose small floral print fabrics instead of the normal plain red, white and blue for the flag. I didn't neaten off the edges, of the applique, I wanted to leave them frayed to give a softer effect.

Thing a day, day twelve

I’m a little behind in my posts but here is TAD 12! I was inspired by all the snow we got earlier in the week and made this felt snowman with a pattern from Wild Olive’s blog. I added arms with black pipe cleaners. The first photo he is looking out the window at the snow. Not sure if he’s longing to be out there and glad he’s not out there in the cold! The second photo shows my daughter Sienna waiting to lunge at the snowman, she thought it was really cute. I already told her it wasn’t for her and that I was mailing it away in a swap!

I also finished the TAD from day nine, Emma’s messenger bag. I think it came out pretty cute! For the inside, I used a silver thread for the topstitching. I thought it would be harder to work with but it didn’t give me any troubles. Fun fun!
